What FFMI tells you that BMI cannot

BMI divides your whole weight by your height squared, which means a lean, heavily muscled person and a sedentary one of the same weight get the same score. Fat-free mass index fixes the obvious flaw: it divides only your lean mass — muscle, bone, organs, water — by height squared. A 90 kg man at 12% body fat and a 90 kg man at 30% have the same BMI and very different FFMIs, and the FFMI is the one that reflects years of training.

Because raw FFMI still mildly penalises short people and flatters tall ones, the literature usually adjusts it toward a 1.8 m reference. We use the constant from Kouri et al. (1995), 6.1, since that is what most published FFMI tables are built against. At exactly 1.8 m the adjustment does nothing; at 1.6 m it adds about 1.2 points.

Why the answer is a range

FFMI needs a body-fat percentage, and body fat is the input people measure worst. Your weight is accurate to a tenth of a pound and your height barely changes, but a home impedance scale reading 20% could reasonably be reading 16% or 24% — and hydration alone can move it, which is why we treat those readings as consistency signals rather than truth. Four points of body fat on an 80 kg body is 3.2 kg of lean mass, which is very nearly a full point of FFMI. Any calculator that hands you "19.8" and stops has quietly thrown that away. The slider lets you narrow the band if your number came from a DXA scan rather than a bathroom scale.

What the categories actually mean

Most FFMI calculators sort you into tiers whose origin is unclear, and whose top band exists mainly to imply steroid use. The bands here come from one identifiable place: a study of 1,866 healthy Italian adults measured by DXA, with 431 men and 1,435 women assessed separately and reported in ten-year age brackets. Your band is the percentile you land on within your own age and sex.

They describe the general public, not athletes. That distinction changes what every label means. "Jacked" here is the 90th to 95th percentile of ordinary adults — a well-trained lifter passes it without difficulty, and it is not a statement about athletic standing. "Massive" covers the top five percent, which is one adult in twenty. The labels are the words people ordinarily reach for to describe a build, chosen so the result reads without translation, but they are still shorthand for a position in a distribution. The tool always prints the percentile range beside the label rather than letting the word carry the claim on its own.

Two further limits are built in. The study measured ages 20 to 80, so outside that window no band is shown at all rather than stretching a reference over a body it never measured. And two of its male age brackets are small — 39 and 34 people — where a 95th percentile is close to being whichever individual happened to be second-largest in the room. Where a bracket is thinner than 50 people the tool falls back to the whole-cohort figures and tells you it has done so.

One thing worth knowing about the arithmetic: the published percentiles are raw FFMI, so your band is calculated from your raw figure rather than the height-adjusted one. Comparing an adjusted number against unadjusted boundaries would quietly misplace short and tall people, who are precisely the ones the adjustment exists to help. The height-adjusted figure is still shown, for comparing yourself across heights rather than against this cohort.

What is FFMI?

Fat-free mass index is lean mass divided by height squared — the fat-free analogue of BMI. Where BMI cannot tell muscle from fat, FFMI counts only the part of you that is not fat, so it answers a question BMI cannot: how much muscle are you actually carrying for your frame?

Why are men's and women's boundaries different?

Because they were measured separately. Female FFMI runs several points lower than male at every level, and several popular calculators give women the identical numeric bands with only the prose changed. The study behind these bands measured 431 men and 1,435 women independently, so no boundary here is derived from the other sex.

Why does this show a range instead of one FFMI number?

Because FFMI is calculated from your body-fat percentage, and body fat is the number people measure worst. 'Jacked' means the 90th to 95th percentile of ordinary adults, which a trained lifter clears comfortably. The words are the ones people actually use about a build, which is what makes a percentile readable at a glance — but every band is shown with its percentile range attached, because the number is the actual claim and the word is only shorthand.
